The SSM Health SLU Hospital Medical Campus Renewal Project is a new 602,000-square-foot hospital with 316 private patient rooms, large intensive care units and a Level I trauma center and emergency department, being constructed in St. Louis, Missouri. Corrigan Company’s scope of work includes the installation of the underground plumbing, storm, sanitary, hot water, hot water return and cold water systems, fixtures and plumbing equipment.
The LEAN or Last-Planner System was implemented on this project. Utilizing this process, we saw inner trade coherency and smooth transitions from one batch to another. It implemented just-in-time deliveries, creating better workflow and safe on-site conditions with less material laydown obstructing pathways. The process makes all trades know who is before and who is after them, creating a stair stepping method which eliminates time coordinating with other trades about who is succeeding on another.
Corrigan Company accomplished the coordination process via 3D/BIM. With the most up to date Revit and CAD software, our drafting department worked extensively with the other trades on a day to day basis to achieve a virtually clash free model. The coordinated model was used to create spool drawings, which were then fabricated in our fabrication shop and sent to the field for installation. By using the coordinated model, we eliminate any guess work and the majority of in-field coordination. With all trades being informed and on schedule, this project was virtually an unload and install process.
